I have not posted much about our lessons lately. When I imported my blog over I looked back at my posts and I posted much more about our learning...somewhere along the way I got sidetracked.
Today I will post about history.
I knew the time period we would be studying this year but I wasn't ready to use Winter Promise just yet. There is something about Winter Promise that I love and then there is something that just keeps me from being able to successfully use their programs, don't quite know what it is.
So, I ordered Veritas Press which was a huge mistake for me. So, I am using all the great literature and resources but putting my own take on things.
What I did order and love is Home School in the Woods New World Explorers. I will definitely order more in the future. I actually need to see what they have for the next time frame we will be learning about and get it ordered as we will finish with this in a couple of weeks.
Hello Melissa! I answered your questions on my basic bread post. Just wanted you to know, in case you don't see it :-)

I love Home School in the Woods. I used it when we studied American History. Grace still asks to make copies of things to this day! I want to use another one next year, but we will be doing world history. Not sure what they have for that. Also, I get the Veritas Press catalog every year and drool over it. What was it that did not work? I probably won't ever order it myself, but was wondering. We love Sonlight and are sticking with it to the end, now that we've come this far!

I am betting your girls would love the Sisters in Time series. My oldest adores it, and we use it to go along with whatever we are studying in history.

You know, we LOVE homeschool in the woods too. Taking a break from it through the Civil War as us girls didn't want to go into too much detail on the wars, but will be starting HSinW up again soon (just finishing the Civil War tomorrow), with The Industrial Revolution through the Great Depression; using it with "All American History". My goal is to finish through the Great Depression by end of school year...we are not fast, but we are thorough. lol
ReplyDeleteI've never seen HS in the Woods. I really like that. I will have to check it out for next year.
ReplyDeleteMy oldest (7.75 yrs old) is looking over my shoulder and wants to post a comment.
ReplyDeleteFrom "Princess Hope": I want to live in Alaska. We will if we get orders. It looks really fun, and the homeschool laws are great. Maybe we can be friends.
I have a love/hate relationship with all the trial and error in homeschooling. But it's a blessing we can keep trying til we find what works. I am still looking. Actually what is NOT working is ME. I need to put more time into school. :(
ReplyDeleteI've been using TruthQuest History with my boys, and we LOVE it! You buy the guide for each section of history, and it it is a huge list of wonderful books to choose from. You can actually use whatever books you like and can find, but the list is wonderful. The author has also written a commentary for each person, place or event that you are studying. This year we're doing the first guide, American History for Young Students I. I love using Homeschool In The Woods with it. I'm using their maps, timeline figures and New World Explorers activity pack. My boys really enjoy that. Take a look at TruthQuest. Since you like using a literature based aproach, you and your family might really enjoy it. You go at your own pace. There's no schedule or set "program". I expect to spend this year and next on this guide, and then work through it about like they suggest on their website.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes in your search for a history program that suits your family.:)
