Weather stickers

No, I am not a weather fanatic, but I thought my visitors would be interested in the temperatures where I live, so you know we do not always freeze. And the sun/moon sticker on the right lets people know that we do not  live in complete darkness six months of the year. So, I guess I am clearing up some misconceptions about Alaska.

Have a great day,

Last Anti-Procrastination Challenge Day

Wow, I am so thankful to Mrs. Wilt over at Sparrow's Nest for bringing this challenge to us these past days. I have greatly learned how quickly little "put off" tasks can be completed. While I still have a long way to go, I saw how helpful this little character trait can be. I now pick things up when I pass them instead of thinking I will do them later. Also, my anti-procrastination for today, getting up early. I do not like getting out of bed at all. I could sleep until 10:00 each and every day if I could. BUT, there are three blessings that live here and need me to get up. Now, I do not sleep until 10 ever, but I do sleep until the last possible moment most days, this morning, I set a time to get up and I got up, showered, swished and swiped, and sat down to spend some time in the morning with the Lord. The day has been great so far, we are almost finished with school for the day!!! So, that is my morning. Thanks Mrs. Wilt.

Family

Today is family day, snowmaching with the kids, some cross-country skiing. The main anti-procrastination is making bird feeders with the blessings. I saw these really cool ones in a magazine in December and have been meaning to make them since then, so. I will try to post pictures on Monday.

Housekeeping

I am attempting to make up for my lack of reading in my younger years and also in preparing to guide my blessings in their reading in the future. That said, I am reading quite a bit lately. One of the latest trips to the library yielded finding the book Eight Cousins by Louisa May Alcott. Here is a quote that I found and had to share.

"This fine talent is neglected nowadays, and considered old-fashioned, which is a sad mistake, and one that I don't mean to make in bringing up my girl. It should be a part of every girl's education, and I know of a most accomplished lady who will teach you in the best and pleasantest manner."

"Oh, what is it?" cried Rose eagerly, charmed to be met in this helpful and cordial way.

"Housekeeping!" answered Dr. Alec.

"Is that an accomplishment?" asked Rose, while her face fell, for she had indulged all sorts of vague, delighful dreams.

"Yes; it is one of the most beautiful as well as useful of all the arts a woman can learn. Not so romantic, perhaps, as singing, painting, writing, or teaching, even; but the one that makes many happy and comfortable, and home is the sweetest place in the world. Yes, you  many open your big eyes; but it is a fact that I had rather see you a good housekeeper than the greatest belle in the city. It need not interfere with any talent you may possess, but it is a necesary part of your training, and I hope that you will set about it at once, now that you are well and strong." (emphasis added)

That section of this book made me get out of bed where I was nice and cozy and warm to come post this tonight. May my family be happy and comfortable and home be the sweetest place in the world to them.

Friday's anti-procrastination

Today's anti-procrastination was forced upon me this morning. I opened a bathroom drawer and found something spilled in the drawer just as I was about to step into the shower, so I cleared the drawer and cleaned it out right away instead of after my shower, which is what I would normally do!!

Blessing #3

For any of you reading this who know my youngest blessing, you already know this so humor me. She truely is our challenge, a precious one  but a challenge none the less. She seems to always need something to do. This challenges me as I need to do things with blessing #1 and #2 for school. That said, everyday I have to find something for her to do until her sister is finished with her schoolwork, then she is fine. Usually it is play dough or puzzles or painting. Today, I decided to get out her scrapbook items that I got her for her birthday and let her go for it. She is loving it so much. I gave her a few items and a quick instruction, she is thrilled, she has her own table, close but away from us and she has completed four pages already. She has wanted to scrapbook for a long time and shame on me for not letting her before this but to I dreaded the whole thing, so now I know it is not that bad. All I have to do spell words for her so maybe she will learn to spell while she scrapbooks!!!

Files today

Today I cleared out the filing cabinet drawer. It needed a good clean out so I got rid of some things and straightened the rest. Working on these projects is really helping me. Thanks Mrs. Wilt!!!!

Curtains

For months I have been needing to do a little work on blessing#1's curtains. He has denim panels that are hung with clips, the end clips keep falling off the end of the rod so today my anti- procrastination project is to address this problem. Thanks to Mrs. Wilt at Sparrow's Nest (link on the side bar) for getting me going with this.

Anti-procrastination

Here are a couple of after pictures from my anti-procrastination project today.

January2007032.jpg         January2007031.jpg

I have neglected these areas for the past couple of months as well as the whole master bedroom. I purchased the red star at Michael's right before Christmas and just put it up today. A couple of things had fallen off of the quilt rack shelf and I had never replaced them, so I just readjusted the accessories in the whole room. Now I will finish my night stand and move things out of the room where they need to go. I also did another small shelf on the other side of the room but did not take a picture of that.

What drives your day?

How do you decide what your plan of the day will be? Do you plan every moment and get stressed if it does not go "your" way? Do you have a loosely laid plan but transition easily when changes occur? Do you have no plan and fly by the seat of your pants all day, then at the end of the day wonder where the day went? Well, I have had days like each of these above. But my goal is balance. I plan our day loosely, we have routine and responsibilities but I want my days to be used as the Lord wants them used. I desire to be on the look out for moments that He sends to direct my day. I must be prepared for my day, but also prepared for other things.

What's on the menu today?

Breakfast: Waffles (extras from another day that I have frozen)

Lunch: Undecided

Dinner: Moose stew with corn muffins

this lady knows

http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/PreschoolersandPeace/257413/What+Non-Homeschoolers+May+Not+Know.html

I just thought this was worth being read, also to remind those who homeschool that it is part of our job and we should treat it as that. We just have a priviledge that most do not appreciate. I count my being able to be at home a priviledge and I do not take it for granted.

Pondering the purpose

I have been avoiding blogging because I am carefully thinking about the purpose of my blog. I know that I want to be faithful to God and be found faithful. I know that I want to bring glory to God only. I know that I need to read what other homeschoolers are doing. I know that I do not want to just have something to do for fun. To me this is serious stuff. So, as I ponder the purposes, be patient, I am here, I am checking your blogs regularly so keep posting.

Homekeeping

In my wanderings around in cyber world, I look for information about homeschooling, homekeeping and cooking. It was not until today that I realized the coralation between all of those things, they all deal with me continuing my education as a keeper at home. So, while others with secular jobs continue their education working towards masters and doctorates to gain promotions, etc. I will just keep continuing my education. It won't yield a promotion, for I am at the top of my pay scale. I cannot attain a higher promotion. I can only learn to do my job better and do it more proficiently.

Dress for blessing #2

January2007.jpg Here is a dress that I am making for blessing #2. I indeed need to sew more to get practice but I am trudging along. The zipper is actually the best I have ever put in but it is by no means a good zipper job. I still need to hem and give it a good press.

We had a power outage last night and this is how the blessings passed some of the time. We also made shadows on the wall. The electricity was only out for about an hour and a half which is a long time for our area, usually our electricity is off for only a few minutes. It was -40 degrees last night and we were very thankful we put in a wood stove when we built on to the house.

Truth

Good Monday morning!

All is well here in Alaska with a temperature of -35 degrees. We are staying home today!!!  We will get a lot of school and household chores accomplished today as a result. So, we are quite joyfilled this morning and warm at home.

We start a new ladies Bible study every January at our church and this year the book we are using is "Lies Women Believe" by Nancy DeMoss. I have a quote from the first chapter. "Regardless of the immediate source, anytime we receive imput that is not consistent with the Word of God we can be sure Satan is trying to deceive and destroy us. What we read or hear my sound right, may feel right, may seem right- but if it is contrary to the Word of God, it isn't right?" (p.32)

How true this is, especially us as ladies, we need to know what the Word of God says so we know what the truth is, not just what some one tells us.

New Year

We made it into the new year very quietly. We went to church Sunday night like always and there we had our watchnight service. A couple of years ago our Pastor decided that since we lived in Alaska we would change our new year's eve service to ring in the new year on east coast time, thus 8 pm. So, we have been doing that the past couple of years and it has been great for our family. We can get the kids home and in bed at a decent time. And we can get to bed early also. So, we were all asleep when midnight came.  My husband had Tuesday off due to President Fords memorial so we had another day off from  school to spend with Dad. So, we had some fun on the snowmachines again.
